Andrea and Andrew, here your faithful Ottawan travel bloggers, now logging more than a month on the coasts of California! Today, we drove a bit inland, (two and a half hours to be exact!) go to a must see location - Joshua Tree National Park. This park encompasses a full 3196 km squared, and spans across both the high altitude Mohave, and lower, cactus-filled Colorado Deserts! This represents a real change of pace for us given that the majority of the past two week for us has been spent in surfing and other oceanside locations. But so far, the park has proven no less pleasurable for this difference, and thus far we’ve enjoyed both the Keys View, which is a vista looking out over the Coachella Valley, and the trails traversing through the boulders of Hidden Valley.
We received free admission to the park, owing to the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. National Parks Service, and with the money we saved, we picked up a great book full of coloring for grown up and coloring mazes at the Joshua Tree Park gift shop, and we took up simple accommodations too in the town of Joshua Tree, so that we could also spend the day tomorrow in the park. We opened up the book in our motel room to find coloring for adults and maze art featuring the local Saguaro (classic three-headed) cacti, mazes featuring the various types of scorpions local to the region, and even a maze featuring the twisted, bristled Joshua Trees, from where the park receives it’s name.
